Why Spiritual Direction?

Despite the endless sea of self-help resources, church programs, activities and the huge offering of books and materials, more and more people are finding themselves lonely, lost in the crowd, longing for significance and meaning; thirsting for more of God than what they are currently experiencing.

Many people are awakening to the life and the simplicity of an intimate relationship with Jesus, a way of experiencing God in the everyday not just on Sundays! IamSignificant.ca offers an historically biblical approach to soul care, to being Christian in daily life, with real purpose and meaning. A holistic integration of your relationship with Jesus into daily living brings meaning and purpose to relationships with friends, family and co-workers and the tasks of the day!

The Process

Spiritual direction is multi-faceted and can include:

  • guidance for growth in your image of God and in methods of prayer
  • help in finding God in life’s challenges
  • assistance in discerning God’s will
  • help with inner healing and dream work
  • companionship for the spiritual journey

Our Approach

A typical session of spiritual direction, the directee (person taking spiritual direction) might share about relationships, family, choices, loss, goals, work, illness, or any other area of life they wish to discuss. The spiritual director’s primary task is to help you recognize God in these situations and how you are responding to these divine initiatives.

Spiritual direction has some similarities to therapy, yet is different from it. Like good therapy it is client-centered and non-directive, that is, the director tries to draw out of you what you need to do rather than giving advice. However, spiritual direction is about your relationship with the God, not about emotional therapy, and the ultimate spiritual director is the Holy Spirit.

As your human spiritual director, our job is to facilitate you in your own healthy relationship with God. Emotional relief is often a valued byproduct, but spiritual direction is different from therapy. Spiritual direction takes a holistic approach to your spiritual formation, which can bring greater purpose and meaning to your life.

Our Relationship

Spiritual Direction is a sharing relationship and empowers you to take responsibility for your own relationship with God and we will never cross that line. We cannot live your faith for you and you cannot live it through us or any other person for that matter. We are members of Spiritual Directors International and subscribe to their Guidelines for Ethical Conduct.
Although we believe it is appropriate at times to discuss psychological and relational difficulties in the context of spiritual direction, we are not psychotherapists, nor do we provide such services.

Confidentiality

Our time together is sacred so our conversations are held in strict confidence. We will not reveal the content of our conversations to anyone unless required to do so by law or court order. On the other hand, you are free to share whatever you choose about our conversations with anyone.

Code of Ethics

We are members of and adhere to the Code of Ethical Conduct of Spiritual Directors International.

How can you benefit most?

To enhance the spiritual direction experience, directees are encouraged to prepare for sessions with prayer and by reflecting upon things they want to discuss, take notes during or after the session on key points, follow up on things your director recommends, and understand that spiritual growth takes time, effort, and patience. Appointments

Upon booking, you will receive a Welcome and Orientation package. Included in the package is our Soul Care agreement which outlines the responsibilities, limitations and Code of Ethics for IamSignificant.ca Spiritual Direction.

If for some unavoidable reason you need to reschedule your appointment, please afford us the courtesy of at least 24 hours notice so that the time can be made available to others. Private Spiritual Direction appointments are 50 minute in duration and start promptly on the hour. Late arrivals are accepted but may be limited to the remaining time of the booking.

How we meet

Our time together can be:

  • In person (where possible)
  • Skype Video Chat (Requires a free software download and a broadband internet connection)
  • by telephone.

The best option can be determined after booking with the Welcome and Orientation package you will receive by email.

Making your Appointment

Simply click on the button below to be taken to the Booking page and follow the instructions. You will receive your confirmation by email. Shortly thereafter your Welcome and Orientation package.

How often do we meet?

This will be determined by a mutual decision at our first meeting. Depending on your individual needs we can meet as often as once a week or as seldom as once every few months. For sustained growth and progress though, it is recommended that you meet with your spiritual director at least once a month. Spiritual direction can take place for just a few sessions or for many years. Most monthly directees maintain their sessions for at least a year. Others see the value of regular, ongoing feedback throughout their spiritual life.

Referrals to others

On occasion, with your consent, we may recommend that you see other spiritual directors or counselors such as psychologists or social workers.

Fees and Payment

It is my conviction Spiritual Direction should be available to anyone regardless of financial situation.  As such, we simply suggest a session fee equal to your personal hourly wage/ salary.  We accept Visa, Mastercard or PayPal, payable before our time together.

We also offer a FREE introductory session for you to get a sense of what Spiritual Direction can do for you!

Cancellation for full refund must be received at least 24 hours in advance of your appointment.

Review of Progress and termination of sessions

Periodic reviews of our time together can be helpful to raise your awareness of your progress. We will ask you to complete a Spiritual Direction Review form which looks at your progress and what you want to work on next.

We support healthy termination of sessions. If you are planning to terminate spiritual direction, it works best if you let us know at least twenty-four hours before your last session. The final wrap-up session gives you the opportunity to talk about our time together, tie up any loose ends, get closure, and part in a positive way.
